Mullingatawny Soup/ Milagu Thanni

For the second day of Blogging Marathon, I prepared this delicious hot peppery soup. Mullingatawny soup has its origin from Tamil. Milagu Thanni which means pepper water has become mullingatawny soup and it is made by Anglo Indians as a result of British Raj in India. I saw so many recipes for this soup and ended up making it from many recipes I came across. Usually soups use corn flour or maida as the thickening agent but this soup uses besan/ gram flour. And also this contains a lot of coconut milk which gives it an unique taste. There is also a spice powder added to the soup which gives the peppery taste. I made the soup a bit thinner as hubby is not very fond of creamy soups. If you want to make it creamy then reduce the addition of water. I have been sick for the past week and am down with severe cold. This soup is so comforting and is perfect for my health as pepper is a good medicine to fight cold.  For a party you can serve this soup along with an appetizer. I made paneer potato pakoras and served them both for our evening snack.

9. Once it starts boiling, switch flame to low and let it cook until thew vegetables are tender.
10. With a hand blender, blend the soup to a smooth puree.
11. IF you want the soup to be thick and creamy, you can proceed to next step but if you like it thinner then pass the soup through a sieve.
12. In a pan add the soup along with coconut milk and salt and heat it.
13. When the soup starts boiling, remove from flame and serve hot along with an appetizer and bread sticks.
